| Balcony Restorations by BAL1 |
| Project: | Concrete Balcony Restoration | | Location: | Kitchener, Ontario | | Project Completion: | 2003 | | Project Value: | $80,000 - $100,000 |
General: The Concrete balcony surfaces had suffered some damage due to the ponding of rainwater and the possibility of a calcium type additive being introduced to the concrete during the original construction of the building. The additional moisture combined with the concrete additive created some significant concrete delaminations and structural concerns. The repairs consisted of the following: Determination and marking of the damaged concrete or 'delaminations' by resonant sounding techniques. Removal of concrete delaminations on the balcony by means of pneumatic breakers. Shored and formed new slab. Sandblasted and primed the existing reinforcing bar with a rust inhibitor. - Poured new redi-mix concrete to repair the concrete balconies.
- Striped form work and finished concrete.
- Painted the underside of the balconies with an elastomeric coating to protect the surface. The flexible properties of the coating helped accommodate any movement in the balcony slab.
Notes: The project also included the repair and replacement of some of the balcony railing panels. The use of concrete pump machines greatly increased the productivity of the project. |
